Blue Cradle is a nonprofit organisation working at the intersection of ocean regeneration and ocean literacy. Through research, education, and storytelling, we build partnerships across science, communities, and culture to support healthy marine ecosystems and informed stewardship. Our work is grounded in collaboration, ecosystem-based thinking, and a long-term vision for the ocean beyond 2030.

Founded in 2020, Blue Cradle is a nonprofit organisation based in Aotearoa New Zealand working at the intersection of ocean regeneration and ocean literacy. Over the past five years, our journey has been one of interdisciplinarity, experimentation, and opportunity—bridging science, education, and policy with a focus on impact and inclusion.

Our core mission is to restore and protect ocean ecosystems while empowering communities to better understand, value, and care for the ocean. Through education, outreach, and scientific collaboration, we help bridge knowledge gaps and make ocean science accessible, relevant, and actionable.

Blue Cradle supports a range of activities, including:

  • Developing and delivering ocean literacy programmes for schools, youth, and the public;

  • Facilitating marine science research and data collection in coastal and offshore environments;

  • Producing engaging communications, films, and public events to connect audiences with the ocean;

  • Promoting regenerative and sustainable approaches to the blue economy.

We partner with researchers, Indigenous communities, NGOs, and government agencies, and operate from research sailing vessels to conduct fieldwork focused on biodiversity, water quality, and emerging marine issues such as microplastics and climate resilience.

Guided by the UN Decade of Ocean Science and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Blue Cradle is building a movement for ocean health, driven by collaboration, integrity, and hope.
