Immersive Lab

Seaweek Immersive Lab | 1–8 March 2026 at Tūranga

For Seaweek 2026, we are bringing a unique ocean experience to the heart of Christchurch. The Seaweek Immersive Lab is a purpose-built 360° projection space where visitors can step inside the world beneath the waves and explore Aotearoa’s ocean environments in an entirely new way.

Over the course of the week, Tūranga’s Central Library will host a series of immersive screenings, interactive sessions, and guided experiences designed for schools, whānau, and the wider community. Inside the circular projection room, audiences will encounter large-scale visuals, spatial sound, and narrative storytelling that highlight the richness of our marine ecosystems, the cultural and historical connections people have with the moana, and the local stories that shape Waitaha/Canterbury’s relationship with the ocean.

The Lab has been created to spark curiosity, support learning, and inspire deeper conversations about the ocean and our role in caring for it. Sessions will connect directly to themes in Aotearoa’s refreshed science curriculum while remaining accessible and engaging for the general public. Teachers will be able to book school slots, while open sessions throughout the week will welcome families, youth groups, and community organisations.

Free to attend (only available to the public outside of classroom hours and on Saturday) and hosted exclusively at Tūranga from 1–8 March, the Seaweek Immersive Lab offers an exciting opportunity for Christchurch communities to experience the ocean in a dynamic, memorable way—without leaving the city.
